about

All compositions featured in this recording* are inspired by literary characters, books or writers.

John Willoughby’s Dilemma explores one of Jane Austen’s most iconic male characters in Sense and Sensibility. The Notorious Death of Gustav illustrates the last days of Gustav von Aschenbach, Thomas Mann’s central character in Death in Venice. The Second Wind of Angela Vicario is inspired by the female character with the same name in Gabriel Garcia-Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The Innocent Gaze of Humbert challenges our perception of Humbert Humbert - the pseudonym of John Ray Jr. - in Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. Hector Walks Through the Gate is a lament for that character’s encounter with his own death in Homer's epic poem The Iliad. And Hergè’s First Girlfriend plays with the idea of Tinitin’s creator using his first girlfriend’s name for Tinitin’s male dog (Milú in the original French version).

This is a live recording made at SMUP's beautiful loft, in Parede, and brought together for the first time on record, four exceptional improvisers: José Dias, Francisco Andrade, Gonçalo Prazeres, and Rui Pereira. Each musician provides this music with a unique sense of narrative, poetry and disruption.

*Except bonus track Transformation, by Francisco Andrade.
